Hone your blade

The title of this post is literal.

A few years ago, I bought a colorful set of knives for about $20. The knife that I used the most, the chef's knife, primarily saw action cutting pork shoulder in bulk from Costco. The first time I used this knife, it was life-changing. Cutting the pork to store in the freezer went from being a chore to being something I looked forward to doing.

A few months, maybe a year later, I noticed the knife was getting duller. The fun task of cutting pork lapsed back into a chore, and this (along with a separately learned appreciation for my George Foreman grill) resulted in my pork consumption decreasing drastically! I hesitated on buying a knife sharpener for a long time because it seemed intimidating, and honestly, I wasn't sure I could justify the price of a sharpener for a knife that was so easy to replace. At the same time, at least four of the other five knives were perfectly fine, so replacing the set seemed wasteful. Can you even sharpen a knife with a purple blade?

Turns out the answer is yes! I bit the bullet and bought a knife sharpener for just $6 on Amazon when shopping for another item. Pulled the chef's knife through four times, and cutting the meat afterward was a dream again.

It's not the biggest victory of all time, but it's a start.
